Tenerife Los Gigantes
Los Gigantes is situated near sheer cliffs, with a small port and a resort town. It survivies on tourism as Las americanas and Los Cristianos, but on a much smaller scale. Beside Los Gigantes is Puerto de Santiago, which is equally pleasant, and it has an attractive black sand beach called Playa de la Arena. Among the things to do in this area are diving (the area has 3 diving centres), boat trips for dolphin and whale watching and parascending. There is also Flipper Uno, which is a reproduction of a 18th century large sailing ship, and they do trips daily.
This park, situated near Los Gigantes, was founded in 1954 to protect the landscape and ecological of great importance that extends around this volcano. To get to the top of the mountain (Pico del Teide), you can either walk or take the cable car which takes about 8 minutes. Once at the top, take a walk around or simply enjoy the view. On a clear day, you can see the islands of La gomera, El Hierro, la Palma and Gran Canaria. It is advisable to take a sweater, as it can feel cooler at this altitude. Guided walking tours are
offered by the park rangers and places must be booked the day before.
Warning: Due to the high altitude,
and thus lower levels of oxygen, people with cardiovascular or pulmonary
problems should refrain from going up. |
